The drive to Assisi will take approx. two hours from Rome , depending on traffic conditions , the first stop will be for the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli where there is the Porziuncola Chapel, the site where St. Francis died in 1226. from here in about 15 minutes we reach the city of Assisi, where you will visit the Basilica of San Francesco ( 1230- 14th century) then the Romanesque Cathedral, the Romanesque Gothic church of Santa Chiara and the church of San Damiano, which welcomed St. Clare whit her first companions,a place of very pure Franciscan poetry and finally “Eremo delle carceri” at 791 metres ,among the woods of Subasio and the old woodland suggestive of St. Francis’ colloquy with the birds.
Assisi is a city of Roman origin (as of Asisium), it is shown by numerous monuments such as the facade of the Temple of Minerva, the Amphitheatre, the Walls, the Forum. With the fall of the Roman Empire, the city became a settlement before the Goths (1545) and then came under the rule of the Lombards.
By the Middle Ages it became independent and was huge development, especially through the monastic movement (especially the Benedictines).
The most illustrious of its citizens St. Francis was born in 1182. Francis was proclaimed a saint in 1228, only two years after his death, by Pope Gregory IX.
Later the town was under the hand of the lordships like that of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the Montefeltro family, Braccio Fortebraccio and Francesco Sforza, until the middle ‘of the sixteenth century, when Umbria was conquered by Pope Paul III restoring papal control over the town.
Later, in the nineteenth century, the city became part of the nascent Italian.
